Through debate, I’ve developed confidence as a speaker and as a person. There’s an inexplicable thrill of debating that instilled in me a love for this activity. Debate helped me come out of my shell, find myself, and forge great friendships. From researching late into the night to goofing around at tournament hotels, debate has been responsible for some of my most cherished high school memories.

Through Delbarton’s debate team, I’ve been able to explore unique topics that are regularly ignored in the classroom. Whether it's pharmaceutical price controls or Venezuela’s oil shortage, Delbarton debate allowed me to broaden my academic focus into new and exciting areas. Even outside the activity, debate has made me a better student, teaching me new and effective ways to research specific ideas.

Throughout my four years on the speech and debate team, I’ve been able to interact with coaches, mentors, and students from all grade levels and a variety of schools at the tournaments we attend … In your travels you get to make countless friends you wouldn’t have met otherwise all while forming a strong bond with your teammates. These competitions can give you the opportunity to compete with the nation’s best thinkers and speakers, which is as challenging as it is rewarding. Regardless of whether you come out on top (which admittedly we frequently do), your team will be right there to cheer you up or to savor your victory.
